In Memoriam: North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem

  • North Dakota AG Wayne Stenehjem, the state’s longest-serving AG, passed away suddenly at the age of 68 on January 28, 2022.
  • AG Stenehjem was first elected in 2000 and won his most recent reelection in 2018 with over 67% of the vote. Prior to serving as AG, he served 24 years in the North Dakota Legislature, first as a State Representative and later as a State Senator.
  • As previously reported, in December 2021, AG Stenehjem had announced that he would not run for reelection in 2022.
  • On February 8, 2022 Gov. Doug Burgum appointed former U.S. attorney and lieutenant governor Drew Wrigley as acting attorney general to serve out the remainder of AG Wayne Stenehjem’s term.
