- A group of 33 AGs wrote a letter to the FTC urging it to implement rules to prevent harm caused by companies’ online surveillance of consumers in response to the FTC’s August 2022 Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Commercial Surveillance and Data Security.
- In the letter, the AGs highlight to the Commission the harms caused by surveillance of consumers by commercial entities, including the potential exploitation of sensitive personal data such as location, biometric, and medical data by data brokers and other entities.
- The AGs ask the FTC to consider data minimization requirements and limitations as a component of its rulemaking. Such rules could mandate that businesses only collect personal data that is absolutely necessary in relation to the business’s purpose, as well as establish retention limits for any personal data that is collected.
