Student Loan Scams May Increase in Wake of Biden v. Nebraska

  • South Carolina AG Alan Wilson and the FCC’s Robocall Response Team are warning consumers about a potential rise in student loan debt scam robocalls and robotexts following the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Biden v. Nebraska, which struck down the Biden administration’s student debt forgiveness plan.
  • AG Wilson and the FCC warn that scammers often use events with a large amount of news coverage to add legitimacy to their fraudulent activity. They warn that scam calls or texts may purport to be from a “student loan forgiveness center” or a state “forgiveness center” or reference a “settlement” with the Department of Education.
  • Consumers who believe they are likely communicating with a scammer are warned not to send money or give personal information, and can direct complaints to the FCC at https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov.
