- California AG Rob Bonta announced he is co-leading a bipartisan coalition of AGs in an investigation into whether TikTok, a popular social media platform with over one billion users worldwide, has violated state consumer protection laws by designing and promoting its social media platform to children, teens, and young adults in a way that exacerbates physical and mental health harms.
- According to a statement from the AG’s office, the investigation will look into the harms using TikTok can have on young users and the extent TikTok knew about those harms. The investigation will also explore the techniques TikTok uses to boost young user engagement, including strategies or efforts to increase the duration of time spent on the platform and frequency of use.
- California co-leads the bipartisan investigation with AGs from Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, Tennessee, and Vermont.
